When a leader is thrust into a new role in an organization that requires performance breakthrough or even a complete turn-around, many eyes will be on that person to see if they are up to the challenge and be the change agent that the team and management team need now. But where should they begin? The first 30-days are important to quickly get a lay of the land, understand the capabilities of the team, gain insight to what the internal & external customers are expecting and lay out a plan of attack.
How should the leader drive the needed change?First, a STRONG TEAM is required. The leader must assure that they put the right team in place and develop their competency. Even with strong team members, effective TEAMWORK is required. To help the team all row together, taking a data-driven, disciplined and process-focused approach will help drive alignment. To build momentum, maintain CONTINUOUS ENGAGEMENT with the team. Support that engagement with transparency, battle-rhythm and executive presence. In a turn-around situation, building TRUST both with the team and stakeholders is a must. Therefore, in the first 30, 60, 90 days and beyond, focusing the team to deliver quick wins and assuring greater disciplined execution, the early results will demonstrate that progress is being made and that there is a real opportunity to deliver more and make the desired breakthroughs.
